If it makes you feel any better, I’m guilty of not knowing these interesting life hacks that has been right in front of our eyes this whole time! Who would have known that the hole at the bottom of a mere padlock has a purpose?!
It’s about that time you realized and acknowledged that some little things do count! Lets take a look at 16 features on our everyday tools that you didn’t know had a purpose!
1. Majority of us are known to be pen cover eaters – it’s like an unusual plastic candy we find in our mouths some times… but of course, one can’t unsee the hole at the apex of the cover which contrary to popular belief, is not actually there to keep the pen from drying out – the hole is so there’s lower risk of suffocation if a small child (nervous adult) ended up choking on the cap.
2. Ever wonder why all of your pots have holes at the end of the handle? Not only to hang them, but to hold that messy spoon while you’re cooking up a storm.
3. Those little discs under the lids of plastic bottles are actually there to keep everything in the bottle. The disc maintains the liquid and carbonation, without it, soda would go flat quickly.
4. You may or may not have noticed that some lids have little spikes in them. This is so you can get through those tiny protective foils easier, just unscrew the lid, flip it, and push on through!
5. Why are those little bumps protruding out of only the ‘F’ and ‘J’ keys on a keyboard? In 10-finger typing, these bumps indicate where your index fingers rest and help you find your way back to the home position without having to glance down from the screen.
6. Curious as to the purpose of those little wings on an Apple power cable? They flip up so you can wrap the thinner part of the cable around the wings and secure it from unraveling. A-ha!
7. For those of us who don’t eat them like chips, the indentation on the flip lid of Tic Tacs is actually there as a dispenser so you can eat one at a time.
8. That hole in the bottom of padlocks serves a purpose you may not have known about. The hole allows water to drain out of the lack when being used outdoors and also can be used to oil the lock for better performance.
9. That little arrow beside the gas gauge on your dashboard is there to tell you which side of the car the fuel tank cap is on.
10. The hole in pasta spoons is not only there to strain the noodles and let water drain out, it’s also used to indicate the size of one person’s portion of spaghetti. Just cram in as many noodles as you can fit into the hole before cooking and you’ll have the perfect portion size for one!
11. The serrated edge on tape measurers is there so you can mark where your measurement is. It may seem obvious now, but a lot of people don’t realize this feature.
12. If you’ve ever gotten a little extra piece of fabric on a new piece of clothing, this can help you from potentially ruining it. The manufacturer includes this sample of the material so you can test how various laundry detergents react to it.
13. The tab that opens a can of soda also doubles as a straw holder so it doesn’t swivel around when you’re trying to make it meet your mouth.
14. The tiny hole on airplane windows is there to allow air to low into the plane and regulate pressure in the aircraft.
15. The punt underneath wine bottles are there as a historical remnant from the era when wine bottles were free blown using a blowpipe and pontil.
16. Those holes in the sides of converse aren’t there for decoration, they are there for ventilation. Many also believe that because the shoes were originally designed for basketball, the holes were used by looping the laces through them for a snugger fit.
