An 18-year-old promising Nigerian basketballer, Seyi Awogbemi Sodiq, has passed away after suffering a heart attack.
The deceased, who was on the Alba Fehérvár men’s basketball team, died in the wee hours of Saturday, November 19, just a week to his 19th birthday.
In the tribute shared on his club’s website, the professional basketball player was said to have arrived Hungary at age 13 and stood out from the other players with his excellent performances in the junior championships. At 16, he made his debut for the Székesfehérvár-based club’s adult team.
However, he was diagnosed with an undisclosed ailment last autumn and after much deliberation, his parents told him to return back to Nigeria instead of undergoing surgery in Hungary, Hungary Today reports.
He arrived his parent’s home in Abuja in February 2022 and underwent a traditional treatment methods. He then resumed basketball few months later and was training with his former team in Abuja, with plans to make a comeback.
It was learnt that he was planning to return to Hungary to play for Alba Fehérvár again. Sadly, he had a heart attack on Saturday morning and passed away.
Seyi was remembered with a minute’s silence before Saturday night’s league game.
