Infant Baby formula-thief

A man who allegedly stole an infant formula worth N45,000 in a supermarket has pleaded for forgiveness. The 28-year-old suspect, Nurudeen Sulaimon, allegedly stole the formula to feed his crying new born baby.

There were different accounts on the circumstance that led to the act. A version said his wife was delivered of a baby last week Saturday, but had difficulty in breast feeding the baby, as her breasts were not bringing out milk. Though the baby was reportedly given water to drink but he kept crying, apparently yearning for milk that could sustain him.

Another version had it that the angry nursing mother, who was discharged the following day from hospital, had a verbal confrontation with her husband over his inability to provide milk for their baby. Nurudeen Irked by the humiliation, Sulamon, according to report, charged out of his apartment on Easter Monday, with a promise to get the infant formula.

He was said to have gone to a supermarket on Oduso close where he allegedly stole some tins of SMS Gold infant formula, unknown to him that he was being viewed from the Close Circuit Television installed in the supermarket. Consequently, he was accosted on his way out of the supermarket by the private security men and handed over to policemen at Igando police station from where he was charged to court.

At the station, he reportedly pleaded passionately to be forgiven, blaming his indulgence on poverty, adding that he resorted to stealing because he could not withstand the cry of his new born baby for food. At the court, he pleaded not guilty.

The presiding Magistrate, Mr A. A. Fashola granted Sulamon bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum. He was remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri pending when he will perfect his bail, while the case was adjourned till April 27.
