Ghana’s Kofi Annan, whose popular and influential reign as secretary general of the United Nations was marred by White House anger at his opposition to the American invasion of Iraq, has died, the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation said on Twitter.
Kofi Annan also shared the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize with the international body he led from 1997 to 2006.
The family tweeted ;
It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday 18th August after a short illness…
May his soul rest in peace.

Oh no! So sad to hear Kofi Annan has died. A national opinion poll in August 2008 had Kenyans vote him as the most popular person for Kenyans after he brokered the peace talks that ended the Post Poll violence. May he rest in peace.
