Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late gospel singer Osinachi, has been remanded at the Kuje Correctional Facility pending the hearing of the homicide-related suit filed against him.
Nwachukwu was arraigned before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory on a 23-count charge that bordered on culpable homicide today, June 3.
He was charged with culpable homicide contrary to section 221 of the Penal Code, which is punishable by death, according to court papers filed by Mrs. Yewande Gbola-Awopetun, Head, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, Department of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Ministry of Justice.
Although he pleaded not guilty to the charge against him, Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme, in a short ruling, ordered his remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre, while his trial was adjourned to June 16 at 12 pm and June 17 at 9 am.
Osinachi died on Friday, April 8th after she was allegedly in a coma for five days prior to her death. Her family members, children, and friends of the deceased, who was a lead singer at the Dunamis International Headquarters, Abuja, all alleged that her husband subjected her to domestic violence.
Speaking from police custody, Nwachukwu stated that his late wife had been battling an illness since November last year. According to him, he first took her to the Federal Medical Center (FMC), then later to Gwagwalada General hospital, and then to National hospital, where she died. He however did not reveal the nature of her illness.
