In other news, the Police Service Commission (PSC) has applauded Usman Baba, the inspector general of police, for authorizing Seun Kuti’s arrest for assaulting a police officer who was on duty.
In a video that has gone viral, the Afrobeat musician was seen slapping and pushing the policeman. While slapping the policeman, he repeatedly asked him; ‘You dey mad’?
According to a statement from the PSC chairman, Solomon Arase, no one, including Kuti, has the right to attack a police officer who was doing their legitimate duties.
Insisting that Nigeria is not a Hobbesian state where might make right, Arase scoffed at Kuti’s effrontery in slapping the policeman.
“We must, as civilized people explore established channels of complaints against alleged infractions by law enforcement officials rather than this uncouth behaviour of assaulting the country’s symbol of authority. We look forward to the prompt prosecution of Kuti to act as a deterrent to others,” Arase was quoted in the statement issued by PSC’s spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani.
According to Ani, Arase praised the police officer for resisting being roused by the behavior of his adversary; he claimed that this outcome would have been deadly.
