The Sabo-Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos has granted an application to extend the remand of embattled singer Seun Kuti for an additional four days.
The police approached Chief Magistrate Mrs. Adeola Olatubosun, seeking an extension of the remand order until May 22.
Mr. Simon Lough (SAN), who led the police legal team, presented the application in court on Thursday.
He stated that the extension is necessary to conduct further investigation into the actual cause of the alleged assault against the police officer.
Seun Kuti, the son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, is currently on trial for the alleged assault of a police officer in Lagos.
A video capturing him slapping and pushing a police officer on Third Mainland Bridge went viral on Saturday, May 13.
The police charged him with assaulting an inspector after driving recklessly on the bridge and intentionally obstructing a moving police vehicle.
He was first arraigned on Tuesday, May 16, during which the police obtained an order to detain him for 48 hours.
However, the magistrate ruled that he should be granted bail in the sum of one million Naira with two sureties in like sum, at the end of the 48-hour remand, with one of the sureties being a landlord within the jurisdiction of the court.
The case had been adjourned until May 22 for mention.
