Nigerian on-air personality, Dotun, and activist, Rinu Oduala, had a minor altercation on the micro-blogging platform X on September 22nd over their differing opinions about the incident that unfolded at the memorial of the late singer, Mohbad.
Recall that a candlelight procession and tribute night was held in honor of the deceased singer at Muri Okunola Park in Lagos on Thursday, September 21st, attended by many celebrities, including Davido, Eniola Badmus, Zlatan, and Dotun.
However, reports began circulating that men of the Nigerian police force fired tear gas at the participants. Video clips of people running in disarray at the scene also surfaced online, with reports of injuries.
In the aftermath of the unrest, Dotun took to X to blame the protesters for refusing to leave the event after it ended around 8 pm and then proceeding to Lekki Toll Gate to stage a protest.
He also retweeted a video that showed the police begging those that converged at Lekki tollgate to go home but they refused, forcing them to use teargas.
He tweeted,
“Honesty over Honesty Nigerians do not listen. WE DO THE MOST. This procession ended at Muri Okunola park over 3 hours ago. We ended and all left. Some still went to converge at the Lekki toll gate. It is not a protest. It is a CANDLELIGHT PROCESSION”
His statement didn’t sit well with Rinu and she attacked him for blaming the people for the action of the police. She said it is an infringement on their fundamental human right, and said there is no justification to fire teargas at the attendees.
