A devastating incident unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday, October 31, 2023, as an old one-storey building collapsed in Igede-Ekiti, resulting in the tragic death of a 13-year-old girl and injuring four others.

The incident occurred in the Odo-Ori area of the community, shaking the residents and prompting urgent rescue efforts.

The building, which had stood for decades, crumbled around 2 a.m, leaving a family of five trapped inside.

Neighbors acted swiftly and managed to rescue the parents and two siblings, who were rushed to the hospital for immediate medical attention.

Sadly, the young girl lost her life in the tragic incident.

Expressing his heartfelt sympathy, Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, described the event as agonizing and devastating. During his visit to the site of the collapse, the Governor emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of occupants in dilapidated buildings across the state.

Representing Governor Oyebanji, Deputy Governor Mrs. Monisade Afuye visited the Adeyinka Adebayo General Hospital to extend sympathies to the victims and wish them a speedy recovery.

The Governor assured that the government would cover the medical expenses of the victims and directed the Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency (EKSEMA) to provide an alternative habitable residence for the affected family.

To prevent similar tragedies, Governor Oyebanji announced that the Ministry of Physical and Urban Planning would begin enforcing strict regulations to evacuate residents from dangerously inhabitable buildings throughout the state.
