In the last few years, D’Banj was arguably the most celebrated Nigerian artiste alive. Over seven years, he kept churning out hits and bestrode the music scene like a colossus. But few months after his break up with his producer and partner of the defunct Mo’Hits Records- Don Jazzy, things began to nosedive and his relevance began to wane.
Since the breakup in 2012, he has worked with four different managers and management companies ranging from Seun Abisagboola popularly known as Bankulli, Tonye Merrit, Tony Nwakalor and Sunday Are of List Entertainment, his manager in the Mo’Hits era.
What we can’t however comprehend is whether these managers could no longer wave the magic wand effectively enough to yield the very badly needed effect to catapult D’Banj’s career to a most enviable height.
However, it might not be far from the truth to say that D’Banj is the architect of his own misfortune.
This week, Seun Apara attempts to examine the dwindling fortunes and career of the pop star and his many struggles to regain reckoning in the spotlight.
1. Capacity: It is an obvious secret that D’Banj lacks the capacity to single handedly write a good song but he is no doubt a great entertainer. His performances are always full of great energy and exude lots of confidence. He is unarguably a superb performer. Beyond that, what is the essence of sweating it out on stage when the fans are obviously not connecting with the music?
It has been observed that D’Banj doesn’t have the ability to write to the maximum capacity of an ideal song. He only writes catch phrases that match his somewhat mediocre vocal strength so that he can confidently express it.
And with a voice that is limited, the song also becomes limited. Aside the fact that his songs now sound monotonous, they are written and performed within the same style, similar dynamics and similar expression.
A common feature in his music of recent is that he sings the entire song at a similar pitch and similar emotional intensity unlike the good old Mo’Hits days. While his relationship with Don Jazzy subsists, Jazzy reportedly composed over 90% of the songs they recorded.
To however cover up for his lapses, one would have expected him to immediately enlist the services of a good songwriter or develop his own capacity. His last major hit still remains Oliver Twist, his last song produced by Don Jazzy.
Iz dx seven mistakes spokes by d banji or is it a gossip.
This writer is absolutely right. The reason there is still the name Dbanj today is not because of what he has done since after his split with Don Jazzy but those before the split.
If nothing else, Dbanj should go back to playing the harmonica in his songs and get a song writer.
You are so stupid for running down another man’s success. Dban’j made don jazzy cos he hyped him so much and played his boy for him to maintain the status of a don. If dban’j wasn’t successful played along with his hype for don jazzy he would look ordinary like other producers. Don jazzy has remained ordinary since their split, featuring in artists music something he doesn’t do when they were Mo hit which Dban’j maintains till date that tells you the difference of one who is struggling to make ends meet and the other. His so called Mavin are just ordinary and nothing special about them. Don jazzy has lost it,average beats, songs which wouldn’make the top 10 and average artists,is that the best don jazzy can do? Endorsements,he has attracted just little with the likes of loya milk, mtn, konga which we all know comes with not much money and too low for don jazzy’s standard compared to the mega endorsement deals Dban’j has penned down since their split. Be a part of success and stop running another man’s success down you idiot and a hater. Dban’j remains the best and he will always remain on top cos he got the qualities, the right team and understands the business side of the industry where the money is and that’s why he is Dbanj.
Has dbanj ever knocked on ur door, for bread before, even if he has, you should have at least make it confidential. You expect people to salute ur rubbish write up? So many break up between partners in the music industry, I don’t see why dbanj and Don jazzy case is so different. These people Don move on with there life’s….but useless bloggers will never let it go. Keep looking for cheap popularity using someone else success. Maybe u guys xpect Dbanj to be singing shakitiBobo or what? Name 5 artist that has remained relevance in the last ten years….and see if dbanj will not come in the first 3. Or the greatest hit to come from Africa after African Queen is still Oliver twist.
