Jennifer Douglas, the estranged wife ex-Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has confirmed that her marriage to the politician is over.
She made this known in a statement released by Punch as she addressed claims that she divorced Atiku because he got married to another woman. According to her, she knew he was entitled to more than one wife as a Muslim.
Explaining the real reason for the divorce, Mrs Jennifer disclosed that they had a disagreement over her decision to stay back in London with their children.
Her words,
“The core reason for the divorce was disagreement over my continued stay in the United Kingdom, to look after my children and several other long-standing issues. I needed to play the role of a mother at this time to the children who have gone through the absence of both father and mother growing up; especially, with the passage of my elder sister who used to look after them. Furthermore, in light of COVID-19 times, choosing to stay with the children was non-negotiable. And, in line with Northern culture, the new wife takes up the baton so I can also focus on giving the kids more care.”
She also accused Atiku of collecting back their Asokoro matrimonial home which he had gifted her earlier in their marriage. She said when she asked for a divorce, the former Vice President asked her to return the documents of the house.
According to her, when she asked him where he wants her to stay whenever she comes to Nigeria with their children, he told to find a place to stay since she was the one that initiated the divorce.
