A newlywed bride was tragically killed, and her husband left in critical condition after a drunk driver crashed into the golf cart they were riding in following their wedding reception on a South Carolina beach on Friday.
According to the Charleston County Coroner’s office, the 34-year-old bride had just gotten married hours earlier on Friday and was leaving the venue in a golf cart with her husband and two others when the drunk driver slammed into them.
The impact was so severe that it sent the golf cart tumbling and rolling several times.
The bride died on the scene, and the three others in the golf cart, including the groom, were injured, with the latter hospitalized and in critical condition.
Investigators revealed that data retrieved from the suspect, Jamie Lee Komoroski’s rental car, indicated that she was driving at 65 mph (105 km/h) and only briefly hit the brakes before she struck the golf cart around 10 pm Friday on Folly Beach.
According to The Guardian, the groom’s mother created a GoFundMe page to raise funds for her daughter-in-law’s funeral and her son’s medical bills.
Details on the page revealed that he has already undergone one reconstructive surgery, and another one is planned. He suffered numerous broken bones as well as a brain injury.
The suspect has been charged with reckless vehicular homicide and three counts of driving under the influence causing death. She faces up to 25 years in prison on each count.
As of Monday afternoon, the suspect remained in the Charleston County jail, and records did not indicate whether or not she had a lawyer.
