So many injuries have been reported ever since they kick started the 2016 Olympic games in Rio few days ago – a Great Britain gymnast is one of those victims who have suffered an injury during the games.
Team Great Britain’s Ellie Downie suffered a sickening fall on her neck – before returning to the Olympic arena to complete the competition.
17-year-old Downie, competing in her first Olympic Games, was competing in the women’s gymnastics qualifying round in Rio. She had already safely negotiated her way through the bars and beam, was beginning the floor potion of the competition when she suffered her freak accident.
Nottingham-born Downie is an accomplished and powerful tumbler but while somersaulting she failed to get her body all the way around and landed on the mat directly on her head and neck.
After leaving the arena for treatment Downie returned to complete the vault landing both well.
Her efforts left Team GB in third place in the overall rankings assuring them of a place in Tuesday’s eight-team final.
