A 45-year-old man identified as Semiu Adegesin has been detained by Ogun State Police Command officers on Friday, March 10, for his contributory negligence that led to the death of a 3-year-old girl, Esther Samuel.
According to a statement from the police command’s spokesman, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the suspect was detained after Imasayi Divisional Headquarters received a complaint that a 13-year-old boy named Ope Babalola had fired and murdered the deceased with a dane pistol in Kukudi Village, Imasayi.
“Upon the information, the DPO Imasayi division, SP Arowojeun Michael, quickly led his detectives to the scene where the deceased was met in the pool of her own blood. Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect Semiu Adegesin loaded his dane gun, and carelessly kept it in an open place at the backyard of the house where children used to play. It was there the 13-year old Ope Babalola picked the loaded gun, pointed it at the deceased and pulled the trigger.”
The victim, according to Oyeyemi, was brought to General Hospital Ilaro without delay, where the attending physician pronounced her dead. He continued by saying that the proprietor of the dane gun had been quickly apprehended and brought to the station for questioning.
Police Commissioner CP Frank Mba, who called the event unfortunate, sympathized with the victim’s family and urged everyone to remain patient while the case is being thoroughly probed. The CP has ordered that the matter be forwarded to the State Criminal Investigation Department’s Homicide division for an undercover investigation.
