The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has released security advisories for Nigerian nationals ahead of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final match between the Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana.
In a statement issued on Monday, February 5, 2024, the High Commission highlighted the hate comments and veiled threats targeted at Nigerians by some South Africans on social media.
In light of this, they advised Nigerians in South Africa to be mindful where they choose to watch the match, their speech, and also how they choose to celebrate if, perchance, the Super Eagles win the match.
The statement reads in part,
“In this regard, the High Commission advised members of the Nigerian community to be watchful of their utterances, be mindful of where they choose to watch the match especially in public places and to refrain from engaging in loud, riotous or provocative celebrations should the Super Eagles win the match,” the statement read.
“Additionally, Nigerians should maintain the good conduct they are known for, and be law abiding before, during and after the match. Should any provocations arise, they should not be reciprocated but reported to the appropriate authorities.”
