Social media influencer, Reno Omokri has stirred a heated debate on social media with his message urging Nigerians considering emigration to think twice before pursuing the idea of greener pastures abroad.
In a thought-provoking tweet, Reno cautioned against falling for the rosy picture painted by friends who have successfully “japa’ed” (emigrated).
Reno highlighted a common occurrence experienced by those who manage to travel abroad, he claimed that there is a change in attitude from friends already settled abroad. He pointed out that some friends may avoid contact as they never truly expected their friends to secure visas, fearing that they might be burdened with accommodating them.
Moreover, he emphasized that many immigrants who thrive overseas are financially independent, engaging in businesses that do not require physical presence or leveraging intellectual property, e-commerce, or monetized social media.
The influencer shed light on the harsh reality faced by numerous immigrants who find themselves caught in the relentless rat race. Working multiple jobs, often enduring a grueling 9-5 schedule, they risk losing their possessions should they miss three consecutive payments.
Reno argued that owning a bungalow in Lugbe, FCT, or a flat in Oworonshoki, Lagos, places individuals in a better position than many of the social media personas whose lives are heavily mortgaged.
Reno’s message has triggered a lot of reactions on the internet, with some commending his frankness, while others criticize him for interfering in their personal choices.
Regardless, his words serve as a reminder for those who plan to JAPA to approach the decision with caution, as a lavish lifestyle abroad shown by their peers may not always match the reality.
