A police inspector has been detained and disarmed by the Delta State police command following an incident where a shot fired by him hit a boy in the leg and abdomen at a checkpoint along the East-West road in Ughelli, Delta state.
The incident, which occurred on December 5, has since gone viral and sparked outrage online after a video of the victim’s injuries was shared by an individual on social media.
The video shows the boy in distress, and his friend crying out in pain and fear, expressing his frustration over the police harassment they were currently experiencing.
The post accompanying the video criticized the police for not thoroughly vetting individuals before granting them uniforms and guns.
Reacting to the incident, DSP Bright Edafe, the spokesperson for the Delta State police command, expressed sadness and confirmed that the officer responsible had been arrested.
However, some members of the public have voiced their dissatisfaction with the situation, questioning the blurred face of the arrested officer and demanding an end to youth oppression from police officers.
