President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly given members of the female national basketball team, D’Tigress cash rewards of N1 million each upon their return to the country.
According to TheCable, Officials of the victorious team were not left out as each of them carted away N500,000 from the cash splash.
The president made the announcement at the commencement the weekly federal executive council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday – his first since returning from his medical leave in the UK.
D’Tigress did the country proud on Sunday by edging Senegal 65-48 to emerge champions of the 2017 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket tournament.
Speaking after the largesse by the presidency, team captain Aisha Mohammed said the recognition would spur the team on to greater heights in future events.
President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Musa Ahmad Kida opined that the team’s success was down in parts to the “democratic process that has returned to the federation”.
Kida expressed hope that the victory by the Sam Vincent-led girls won’t be a one-off as they are well poised to replicate the feat at the 2018 FIBA World Championships in Spain.
