Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 27-year-old suspected internet fraudster, “Yahoo Boy,” for beating his undergraduate girlfriend to death.
The suspect, identified as Obeta John, who resides in the Ishara area of Ogun, is said to have locked his girlfriend, Idowu Buhari, in his room and brutally assaulted her till she gave up the ghost.
Obeta, who confessed to the crime following his arrest on Tuesday, November 29, said a certain amount of money from one of his clients was paid into the account of his deceased girlfriend, which she refused to hand over to him.
He said the money led to a scuffle between them that eventually led to the death of the girl. Until her death, the deceased was a HND1 Mass Communication student at Gateway Polytechnic in Saapade.
Concerned neighbors who tried their best to persuade Obeta to open the door to stop him from attacking his girlfriend called the police to the scene of the incident.
Upon the arrival of the police, the victim was rushed to the hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival by the doctor on duty.
The spokesperson of the state police command, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the arrest, said the suspect was picked up following a distress call received at Ode-Remo divisional headquarters.
“Upon the distress call, the DPO Ode-remo division, CSP Fasogbon Olayemi quickly led his men to the scene where they met the victim in the pool of her blood after forcing the door opened. The victim was quickly rushed to State Hospital Ishara,but was pronounced dead by doctor on duty.” Oyeyemi said.
“On interrogation, the suspect, Obeta John, informed the police that he is an internet fraudster, and that certain amount of money from one of his clients was paid into the account of his deceased girlfriend which she refused to relinquish to him.
He stated further that it was the argument over the said money that led to scuffle between them which eventually led to the death of the girl.” He added.
Speaking further, Oyeyemi revealed that the state commissioner of police, CP Lanre Bankole, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
